white ash - fraxinus americana

Common Name: white ash

Scientific Name:
Family: Oleaceae
Genus: Fraxinus

Species: americana

Hardiness Zone: 3 to 9
Height: 60 to 80 ft
Width: 60 to 80 ft

Description:
White ash is native to the forests of the Midwest. Planting white ash in any capacity is not recommended due to its vulnerability to the Emerald Ash Borer, an insect whose larva bore into and girdle the tree. Before the Emerald Ash Borer's arrival, the white ash was a favored urban tree. It has wonderful purple fall foliage, can withstand some of the harshest urban environments, and has better form than its relative green ash.
