Common Name: tulip tree, yellow poplar
Scientific Name: Family: Magnoliaceae Genus: Liriodendron Species: tulipifera Hardiness Zone: 4 to 9 Height: 60 to 90 ft Width: 30 to 50 ft Description: Tulip tree is a large deciduous tree that does best in fertile, well-drained soil and full sun. It has showy yellow flowers that bloom in the spring after the 4-lobed leaves are fully developed. Later in the season, the brightly colored petals will fall and collect at the base of the tree. Liriodendron tulipifera is the state tree of Kentucky, Indiana, and Tennessee, but it will still do well in Minnesota's harsher climate under the right growing conditions. Tulip tree is excellent for use as a shade tree dues to its size and aesthetic appeal. Citations: "Liriodendron tulipifera".
