The northernmost part of its native range is southeastern Minnesota but it can be planted farther north. This tree prefers moist soils but is adaptable to many different soil types and sites. They have distinct peeling bark that make the trees readily identifiable. The nuts of these trees are edible, and the wood is used for firewood and smoking food. A plethora of birds and small mammals enjoy this tree and it has no serious diseases or pests.
