quaking aspen - Populus tremuloides
Common Name: quaking aspen, american aspen
Scientific Name: Family: Salicaceae Genus: Populus Species: tremuloides Hardiness Zone: 1 to 6 Height: 40 to 80 ft Width: 10 to 30 ft Description: The quaking aspen is currently the most abundant tree Minnesota and is widely used as a pulp tree. These trees grow very fast and are often the first species to regenerate after an area is disturbed or cleared, due to their love for full sunlight. They naturally grow in large groups, and all stems in each group generally sprout from the same root system, making them all genetically identical. These clones can cover many acres. In the urban setting these trees have proved to have many disease and insect problems. Hypoxylon canker is major contributor to mortality rates in the Twin Cities. |
