Ohio buckeye - Aesculus glabra
Common Name: Ohio buckeye
Scientific Name: Family: Sapindaceae Genus: Aesculus Species: glabra Hardiness Zone: 3 to 7 Height: 20 to 40 ft Width: 20 to 40 ft Description: The Ohio buckeye's native range is in the understory of forests in states southeast of Minnesota, but it is a decently common tree in parks and landscapes here. These trees produce copious amounts of nuts and are wildly attractive to squirrels. The nut is dark brown with a light patch that resembles a deer's eye, which is where the common name comes from. People sometimes like to carry buckeyes in their pockets as good luck charms. The terminal buds found at the end of branch tips are quite large. Ohio buckeye has large, showy flowers that bloom in April-May. |
