Northwind maple - acer x pseudosieboldianum 'northwind'
Common Name: Northwind maple, Northwind Korean maple, Northwind Japanese maple
Scientific Name: Family: Aceraceae Genus: Acer Species: palmatum x pseudosieboldianum Hardiness Zone: 4a Height: 20 ft Width: 15 ft Description: Northwind maple is a cross between Japanese maple (Acer palmatum) and Korean maple (Acer pseudosieboldianmum). Originally developed by Iseli Nurery in Oregon, they succeeded in growing a species that combined the beauty of the Japenese maple and the cold tolerance of the Korean maple. The result is hybrid that can survive winters all the way through hardiness zone 4, as cold as -30 degrees F. Northwind maple is excellent for use as an ornamental. With leaves that emerge red in the spring, become green in the summer, and turn a brilliant orange color in the fall, this species is beautiful throughout the year. They typically only reach about 20 feet tall, and prefer full sun to partial shade. Adequate moisture is essential, but this species will not tolerate standing water. Average life expectancy is about 60 years. References: Spengler, Teo. "Northwind Maple Information: Tips on Growing Northwind Maples".
