New Horizon elm - Ulmus davidiana var. japonica x ulmus pumilia
Common Name: New Horizon Elm
Scientific Name: Family: Ulmaceae Genus: Ulmus Species: Davidiana var. japonica x Ulmus pumilia Hardiness Zone: 3 to 7 Height: 30 to 40 ft Width: 15 to 25 ft Description: New Horizon elm is a hybrid cross between a Japanese elm clone (U. davidiana var. japonica) and a Siberian elm clone (Ulmus pumilia). Quite possibly the most important characteristic of New Horizon elm is its resistance to Dutch Elm Disease. Along with DED, it boasts a resistance to elm leaf miner and veriticillium wilt. Its moderate tolerance to salt spray, drought, and poor drainage conditions add to the list of attributes that make New Horizon elm well-suited for urban use. It prefers full sun and moist, well-drained soil. If given the proper growing conditions, New Horizon will display a fine textured appearance with dark green leaves. The foliage will turn a rusty-red color in the fall. To maintain tree health, elms should not be pruned between mid-April and mid-October. References: "New Horizon elm".
