ginkgo - ginkgo biloba
Common Name: ginkgo
Scientific Name: Family: Ginkgoaceae Genus: Ginkgo Species: biloba Hardiness Zone: 3 to 8 Height: 50 to 80 ft Width: 30 to 40 ft Description: Considered to be a living fossil due to its long genetic presence, Ginkgo trees are trees with character. The female ginkgo tree produces a fleshy covered nutlet that emits an odor that is at best, unfavorable. This said, these nutlets are actually edible once the fleshy skin is removed and are considered a delicacy in eastern countries. These trees are actually more closely related to conifers than deciduous trees. This can be seen when looking at their conical form. They are tolerant to almost anything that the urban environment can throw at them and due to their strong apical dominance, they require little pruning after establishment. So in closing, once they are established and pruned up to the height requirements of a city tree, they need little care. |
