butternut - juglans cinerea
Common Name: butternut
Scientific Name: Family: Juglandaceae Genus: Juglans Species: cinerea Hardiness Zone: 3 to 7 Height: 40 to 60 ft Width: 40 to 60 ft Description: This mid to large sized tree has long, pinnately compounded leaves with 11-17 leaflets. The butternut is a native Minnesota tree that produces edible nuts that are enclosed in a ellipsoidal husk covered in sticky, small hairs. Common in mesic woods, and just above floodplains, butternut prefers average moisture sites, needing full sun to establish. The trees are becoming harder find in their natural habitat due to butternut canker (Sirococcus clavigignenti-juglandacearum) having a devastating effect on their mortality. It was listed as an endangered species in Minnesota in 2013. References: Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.
