burning bush - euonymus alatus
Common Name: burning bush, winged spindle, winged euonymus
Scientific Name: Family: Celastraceae Genus: Euonymus Species: alatus Hardiness Zone: 4 to 8 Height: 5 to 15 ft Width: 5 to 15 ft Description: Burning bush is a slow-growing shrub or small tree known for its bright fall color. During autumn, its 1-3" elliptical leaves turn a brilliant red, especially on plants grown in full sun. If in shade, the color is slightly more muted or pink-looking. Native to China, Japan, Eastern Russia, and Korea, Euonymus alatus has become invasive in many eastern and midwestern states. It tends to outcompete native species in prairies, pastures, and woodlands. Its adaptability to a wide range of soil types and pH ranges allows it to thrive in many different habitat types.
