bur oak - quercus macrocarpa

Common Name: bur oak

Scientific Name:
Family: Fagaceae
Genus: Quercus

Species: macrocarpa

Hardiness Zone: 3 to 8
Height: 60 to 80 ft
Width: 60 to 80 ft

Description: These long lived trees are one of the native trees  to Minnesota. They can still be found in their natural environment among the plain areas, tolerating drought conditions. The bur oak can grow to be quite large and may be unsuitable for some home's lawns. They do however make great park area trees. These trees are part of the white oak group and have more success tolerating oak wilt, but still need to be pruned in the dormant season.
