Black willow - salix Nigra

Common Name: Black willow

Scientific Name:
Family: Salicaceae
Genus: Salix

Species: nigra

Hardiness Zone: 4-9
Height: 30 to 60 ft
Width: 30 to 60 ft

Description:

This wet site loving species has one of the largest range of willows in North America. Preferring moist, well-drained, wet soil, black willow is intolerant of drought conditions. Weak-wooded, and prone to weak branch structures, this tree is susceptible to ice damage and regular pruning is required in a managed system. Roots are also known to invade sewer pipes. When selecting a planting site, it is important to keep these factors in mind.
