Description:​ Tolerant of cold northern climates and wet sites, black spruce is a uniquely adapted Minnesota native tree commonly found in pure stands in relatively uninhabitable nutrient- poor bogs. It has short needles, and very small, egg-shaped cones. Twigs may have short, orange hairs, giving a rusty appearance. Shape is narrow and pyramidal, with sweeping branches with slightly upturned ends. Black spruce is not commonly used in landscape plantings, and it may be stressed in warmer weather.
