Black oak is a large shade tree that is native to the Chicago region. This oak prefers acid and dry soils. This tolerance to drought, and salt spray has increased the potential use in the urban environment. Since the potential for oak wilt, prune in the dormant season to avoid attracting sap sucking beetles that can vector the wilt.
