Description:​ 
Black cherry is primarily a forest species that does best in mesic, mineral soil. This species is shade-intolerant, and is found in successional vegetation or in canopy openings. Flowers are small, white, and 5-petaled blooming in spring, and early summer. Fruit is a berry-like, round drupe that is black when ripe. The fruit is edible when ripe, and is an important food source for wildlife. Cherry black knot, a fungal disease, is a common problem on the twigs, branches, and trunk.
